Gunman shoots two, kills himself
A 45-year-old Leesburg man killed himself early Oct. 27 after shooting his estranged wife and a man at a home near Lovettsville.
Police say Barry L. Gates entered the house in the 39000 block of Irish Corner Road at about 2 a.m. and fired several shots at two adults. Police would not confirm the victims' names Oct. 27.
The victims were able to run away from the house to two nearby houses and call police, Troxell said.
The male victim was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is listed in guarded condition, Troxell said. Guarded condition is between serious condition and stable condition.
The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Troxell said.
Both are expected to recover, Troxell said.
After shooting the pair, Gates barricaded himself in the home, and police began negotiating for his surrender.
When Gates stopped communicating with the negotiators, police went into the house at about 6:30 a.m. and found he had shot himself, Troxell said.
Although Troxell would not confirm the victims' identities, the address of the home where the shooting occurred is also the address of a local business, Christy's Canines, owned by Christy Gates.
On Barry Gates' Facebook page, a Christy Gates is listed as a friend.
Also on his page is a string of comments posted Oct. 8 about his wife wanting $20,000 from him. He also wrote that she was living with a man.
