Reston Hospital opens Ashburn Education Center
Reston Hospital Center chief executive officer Bill Adams said his hospital and its parent company, HCA, are in Loudoun to stay, at the May 21 debut of the Reston Hospital Center's Ashburn Education Center.
Upward of 45 percent of new mothers in Reston's maternity center drove there from homes in Loudoun, Adams said. The Ashburn Education Center will offer classes and wellness services to those patients closer to their homes, and will take pressure off The Family Center and other classes at the Reston campus.
No physicians will be on the premises, said Joanna Fazio, the hospital's communications director. Many classes will be held in the evenings and on weekends. The center will host flu shot clinics in the fall.
Adams gave a check for $1,000 to Bud Elliott, president of the Loudoun Interfaith Relief board of directors. That check launches a partnership with Loudoun Interfaith Relief, Adams said. Donations of nonperishable foods will be accepted in lieu of fees for some classes.
Loudoun Supervisor Stevens Miller (D-Dulles) lobbied hard to get approval for HCA's Broadlands Regional Medical Center project, which was rejected by Loudoun supervisors Feb. 3. He took the chance to take a jab at Inova Loudoun Hospital and its opposition to the Broadlands project.
When his wife needed emergency treatment last week, Miller said, she requested the more distant Reston emergency room.
“The community puts more value on the way a hospital runs its ER than the way it runs its PR," Miller said.
Adams said, “Broadlands Regional Medical Center has not become a reality. Yet.”
The planned partnership between Broadlands Regional Medical Center and the Children's National Medical Center, a centerpiece of the Broadlands project, will continue at the education center, Adams said.
Classes offered at Reston include infant CPR and safety, joint replacement and orientation, orthopedics, diabetes education and nutritional counseling. Support groups for cancer patients and their families, and for new mothers, also meet regularly. All will have a presence in Ashburn, said Cyndie Hochstrasser, director of health and wellness at Reston Hospital.
Classes at The Family Center, which will have branch classrooms in Ashburn, include sibling classes (getting big-brothers/big sisters-to-be ready for the big event), childbirth preparation, toning for two, baby care basics and basics of breastfeeding.
The Ashburn Education Center is at 20925 Ashburn Professional Plaza (intersection of Ashburn Farm Parkway and Claiborne Parkway) , Suite 110. Visit www.restonhospital.com/commCal.asp for information on classes and events, or call 877-689-3627.
