Pucker up for Kiss-A-Pig

It's summer in Loudoun, and that means time for the fair. Time for the fair means time for four stalwart supporters of youth activities to get ready to pucker up for the porker.

That's right: Kiss-A-Pig. There are four candidates and whoever raises the most money by 7 p.m. Aug. 1 will smooch one well washed piglet in front of the crowd at the main horse arena at the fairgrounds on Dry Mill Road west of Leesburg.

Chicago style politics rule here – vote with your wallet, vote early, vote often. Every nickel, every $100 bill, every $1,000 check, that goes into one of those piggy banks ends up benefiting youth activities at the fair.

Candidate 1: Grafton deButts was not in 4-H, “but growing up in western Loudoun, I always had an affinity for swine.” He's moved all of six miles from his Hamilton home to Leesburg, where he lives with his wife and 8-month-old son. He is the membership sales manager for the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce.

Platform: As a child, I wanted to kiss pigs competitively and I've always been looking for that moment when I could turn a hobby into a profession, take it to the next level. This is my breakthrough moment. The Loudoun County Fair is the American Idol of pig kissing.

How to give: Go to www.graftonskissingapig.com, or drop by the office at 19301 Winmeade Dr., Suite 210, Lansdowne Town Center.

Candidate 2: Sean Dunn

Texas native Sean Dunn just started 1757 Real Estate in downtown Leesburg. He lives in Lincoln with wife Katie and two children.

Rodeo is a part of any Texan's life, and the Dunns attend the fair every year. “It's a great cause, 4-H is an incredible organization, one that teaches kids the value of hard work and commitment.”

Platform: If I have to kiss a pig to raise money for a good, cause, I'm happy to do it.

How to give: Wherever you see a Dunn piggy bank. At the 1757 office at 6 N. Wirt St. in Leesburg (after July 1, 22 W. Market St.).

Candidate 3: Bradley Gable grew up in Leesburg about two blocks from his Southern Trust Mortgage office. After college he “got back to Loudoun as fast as I could.” He lives on a farm near Bluemont with his wife and two girls. Daughter Ellie is prepping her steer for the fair, and at least one fund raiser will be at the farm.

Bradley's 4-H calf died, so he carried on in the horse club, including a trip to Richmond to give a talk on fox hunting.

Platform: Any thing I can do to help the fair, I will.

How to give: Buy some barbecue any time June 19th at the South Street Under fund raiser. Give at www.bradgablekissapig.org , or find piggy banks all over town. Stop by the office at 28 West Market St.

Candidate 4: Valerie White moved to Waterford from her native Fairfax 14 years ago to get back to the country. She founded Blue Ridge Title and Escrow 11 years ago.

She and her husband and thee children are involved in the community and attend the fair, the Kiss-A-Pig and the livestock auction every year. 'If I can do something good, why not?” she said.

Platform: I'm the nicest.

How to give: Her daughter's pig, decorated with butterflies and dragonflies, will be on the settlement table at Blue Ridge Title, 4 Loudoun St. SE in Leesburg.
