Supervisor Miller, please skip the theatrics
The latest board meeting Feb. 3 was another display of Supervisor Stevens Miller's childish, boorish and just plain unnecessary badgering of his fellow lawmakers.
Anticipating that the vote wouldn't go his way regarding HCA's plan to place a second hospital in Broadlands, the Dulles supervisor questioned the merits and motives of his colleagues. These are the same supervisors he is going to have to work with for the next three years.
Those who had the poor judgment not to agree with him, Miller said, rolled out the "necessary incantations" that land use was the basis for their vote. "But listen to their reasons," he went on, and accused each of them of hiding ulterior motives.
The county's zoning ordinance, he told his colleagues, "was not written by God."
OK. Is that a reason to ignore it? Mr. Miller seems to think so.
Miller called those board members who voted against HCA "confused individuals seeking to justify a bad call ... making excuses that are not relevant."
We're not questioning the job difficulties Miller, board chairman Scott York and the other seven supervisors are confronted with each day. The HCA-Inova vote was, perhaps, the most important vote since rural rezoning. But these lawmakers are elected officials and need to be held accountable for their actions.
Miller's act is getting wearisome. We know he wants to do good for his constituents (Hey, he's even offered to take a 10 percent pay cut), but please save the theatrics for nonpublic displays of emotion.
RIGHTING A WRONG
Regarding the Feb. 3 votes, the supervisors rectified a wrong by approving a marketing partnership with the Washington Redskins. The board voted 5-3-1, reversing its Dec. 2 decision.
Hats off to Miller, Lori Waters (R-Broad Run), Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling), Kelly Burk (D-Leesburg) and Susan Klimek Buckley (D-Sugarland Run) -- all of whom voted in favor of the Redskins partnership.
This action is well worth the money and will be a great boost for tourism in the county, especially if someday the Redskins bring a hall of fame to Loudoun.

Wait, it says, "personal attacks are unacceptable." Why doesn't the Times follow its own policy, and speak to issues rather than attacking a person for the way he stood up for something? Sheesh.

It is interesting that you thank 4 supervisors for voting for the Redskins and not the entire 5 who voted for this measure. Stevens Miller co-sponsored this bill with Lori. How irresponsible of a seemingly "unbiased" news agency to blast a supervisor for defending his position and then not even recognize him for doing something with which you agree.
Also, the current zoning was written by the previous board who were obviously biased against this project and expected that the huge Rt 50 CPAM would be approved, so perhaps "righting a wrong" should be to reconsider the current zoning and put a hospital in the population epicenter rather than in a location so as not to upset another hospital.
