Field signs with Giants
Michael Strahan. Osi Umenyiora. Mathias Kiwanuka. Justin Tuck.
That is a short list of exceptional defensive lineman who have donned the red, white, gray and blue for the New York Giants in the last decade.
Broad Run High School graduate Alex Field will look to eventually add his name to that list after signing a three-year contract with the Giants April 26 as an undrafted free agent.
Mike Waufle, the defensive line coach for the Giants, called Field Sunday and told him he would be a good fit for his top-rated unit. New York did not select a defensive lineman in the National Football League draft.
“[Waufle] has taken a lot of players and molded them into great NFL players. That was really attractive,” said Field, 22, of Ashburn, who also received calls from representatives of the St. Louis Rams and the New England Patriots.
Field's NFL stock rose following a stellar senior season for the University of Virginia in 2008. In 12 games, Field registered 48 tackles (25 solo and 23 assisted) and 4.5 sacks. He totaled 7.5 tackles for a loss and recovered a fumble.
Field, at 6-foot-6 and 278 pounds, considers himself equally adept at defending the run or the pass. He will reunite with Virginia Cavalier teammate Clint Sintim in New York. Sintim, a linebacker, was drafted by the Giants in the second round.
Field will begin the process of proving his worth to the Giants May 7-10 during a rookie mini camp.
“I know I have to get up there and take care of business,” Field said. “Players come and go all the time in the NFL. I want to make an impression on the coaches. I'm really looking forward to the opportunity.”
Note: Field's younger brother Will is also a heralded athlete. Will Field was a lineman on Broad Run's 2008 state championship football team. The Spartan senior has accepted a scholarship to play lacrosse at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.
