Police and fire briefs
The following news happened in Loudoun's public safety fields throughout the week.
Three arrested for shot fired into home
Three people have been charged in connection with a July 4 incident in which a gunshot was fired into a house in Ashburn.
Bryan J. Ortiz, 20, and Jeffrey T. Brown, 21, both of Ashburn, were charged with hindering an investigation, while a 17-year-old boy was charged with reckless use of a firearm. The teenager's name was not released because he is a juvenile, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.
Amid the noise of fireworks July 4, residents in the 20400 block of Needleleaf Way heard a loud pop. Then they saw a bulge in a bedroom wall of the house and found a hole on the outside of the house, Troxell said.
After the incident was reported to police, deputies arrived and found a bullet lodged in the wall, Troxell said. Police have recovered the gun that was used.
Leesburg employee charged
A buildings maintenance employee for the Town of Leesburg was charged Aug. 27 with stealing from Relay for Life donations, five employees and the town.
Joshua Martinez, 26, is accused of taking about $740 from April through August, Leesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Wes Thompson said.
Martinez was charged with five counts of petit larceny. He also was charged with driving on a revoked license, which was unrelated to the larceny charges, Thompson said.
He was arrested and released on a $1,500 unsecured bond.
Three-vehicle crash
A McLean man was charged with reckless driving Aug. 31 following a three-vehicle crash on Route 7 near Claiborne Parkway in Ashburn.
Russell J. Lovell, 25, was driving a Honda east on Route 7 about 5 p.m. when he lost control, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said. The vehicle crossed over the median and was hit by a westbound 2004 Ford Expedition. The Honda spun around and struck a Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office patrol car that also was traveling westbound, Troxell said.
Lovell was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other people involved did not need to go to a hospital. One passenger was treated at the scene.
A preliminary investigation found that Lovell was driving faster than the posted speed limit of 55 mph and that he was weaving through traffic before the crash, Troxell said.
Westbound traffic on Route 7 had to be rerouted for about an hour due to the crash.
Trial dates set
Phoung Kim Thi Dong, 39, will be the first person to stand trial in the July 23 slaying of Leesburg resident Hanh Thi Hoang, 66.
The four-day trial is set to begin Nov. 18 at 9 a.m.
Dong's daughter, Julie Dong, 18, will stand trial for the slaying less than a month later. Her five-day trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 8 at 9 a.m.
Hoang was Phoung Dong's mother and Julie Dong's grandmother.
