The following is a list of upcoming productions and auditions in the Loudoun-Fairfax area: Productions - Loudoun Symphony Orchestra. The Loudoun Symphony Orchestra opens its 2008-09 season Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, and Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville.The orchestra welcomes families with free tickets to all concerts for ages 18 and younger.
The concerts include works by Brahms (“Fourth Symphony”) and Dvorak. The Dvorak “Cello Concerto” features cellist Stephen Framil.
Concertgoers on Saturday evening may attend a free preconcert lecture and a string workshop performance at 7 p.m.

'Guys and Dolls.' Aurora Studio Theatre will offer the American musical classic “Guys and Dolls” in November at the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center, 36441 Blueridge View Lane, Purcellville.
Performance times are Saturday, Nov. 1, 8 p.m. (costumes encouraged, reception follows performance); Sunday, Nov. 2, 3 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 7, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 9, 3 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 14, 8 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 15, 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 16, 3 p.m.
This production is directed by James Campanella with musical direction by Diane El-Shafey, choreography by Carolyn Christensen and Amy Lanham, and fight choreography by Terry Smith. This will be the first community theater musical performed on the stage of Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center.

'Flowers for Algernon.' The Sterling Playmakers are offering "Flowers for Algernon" in November, with a plot centering around a scientific study involving a man, a mouse and an experiment.
Two scientists (Kevin Robertson, Joe Campanella) have developed a medical procedure that can increase intelligence. The tests have worked on a mouse; now they're ready to try it on a human being. The perfect subject seems to be a mentally challenged man named Charlie Gordon (Justin Fox).
Also in the cast are Sara Bickler, Ellen Cranley, Herbert DuVall, Tina Esfarjani, Corinne Fox, Herb Fuller, David Grimm, S Paul Long, Beth Robertson, Meg Roosma, Scott Ruegg, Ty Sheedlo, Melisande Smith, Terry Smith, Anika Steenstra, Joao Versos, James Wood and Jenny Wood.
"Flowers for Algernon" is based on the short story and novel by Daniel Keyes. It won the Hugo and Nebula awards for science fiction writing. The family-friendly play is produced by James Wood and directed by Terry Nelson DiMurro. Performances are Nov. 7-8 and Nov. 14-5 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 9 and Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Sterling Middle School on Holly Avenue in Sterling.

The Master Singers of Virginia, one of Northern Virginia’s premiere a cappella choral ensembles, announce their 14th season.
Dec. 5, Dec. 7, Dec. 13-14: Benjamin Britten’s “A Boy Was Born.” Also works by Paulus.
Feb. 21, Feb. 28, March 1: Poulenc’s “Mass in G,” “Prayers of St. Francis of Assisi,” “Petites Voix.” Also folk songs from England.
April 18-19, April 25: Britten’s choral dances from “Gloriana,” Byrd’s “Mass for Five Voices.” Also sets of songs of Shakespeare texts, including music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Martin, Jaakko Mantyjarvi.
Tickets are on sale for all winter and spring concerts. Season tickets are $38 for adults and $30 for seniors or students. Individual tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors or students in advance, $2 more at the door.
Performance locations include Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church in Ashburn, The Franklin Park Center for the Performing and Visual Arts in Purcellville, Saint Luke Catholic Church, Christ Church of the Redeemer in McLean and St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg.

Auditions
Chorus of the Old Dominion. The Loudoun Chorus of the Old Dominion is recruiting men to sing in its special holiday chorus.
The group sings 10 weeks through the holiday season. There are rehearsals for both Wednesday and Thursday nights in alternating weeks. In addition, music director Ray Sitter holds special rehearsals and coaching sessions at his home in Round Hill. Upcoming rehearsals are Oct. 15, Oct. 23 and Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Leesburg.
There are 52 audio learning tracks online at www.odchorus.org; on each track a singer performs one voice part of one of the 13 songs in the holiday repertoire. The chorus sings most of its songs in four-part harmony.

Wakefield Chorale. The Wakefield Chorale holds open rehearsals Tuesdays, 7:30-9:30 p.m., in lecture hall B-167 of Lake Braddock Secondary School, 9200 Burke Lake Road in Burke. Call Jule at 703-451-7917.
Youth orchestra conductor. The Loudoun Symphony Association has an opening for the position of youth orchestra and string workshop conductor for the 2008-09 concert season.
The ideal candidate will have youth orchestra experience and lead both groups beginning in the fall.
The youth orchestra meets Wednesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., and the string workshop meets Wednesdays, 7-7:30 p.m.
Duties include conducting all rehearsals and concerts, acting as librarian for each group, coordinating parent volunteers and managers, holding auditions, and establishing a relationship with the music educators of the community.
The salary is $5,000.

Master Singers. The Master Singers of Virginia, directed by Erik Reid Jones, are looking for new members.
The group is one of the premier a cappella choral ensembles in Northern Virginia, concentrating on 20th- and 21st-century choral music. The Master Singers perform three major concert programs each season, as well as other engagements throughout Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C., area. This will be the Master Singers' 14th season.
