Hillsboro

Ramblings, Andrew McKnight, household hazardous waste collection, Old Stone School update, voting place, rummage sale, flu shots, DCC events, tag sale and birthdays

By Sue Ulland

Ramblings: Twenty-five years ago I was asked to write the Hillsboro column for the Neighbors Section (yes, an entire section) of the Loudoun Times-Mirror. Nettie Painter had authored this column for 33 years and I was “the new kid on the block” and was tentative to assume her well-tenured tradition. I couldn’t believe anyone would do anything for that long.

I finally agreed and anguished with the very first sentence of my very first column. This was well before personal computers, and the electric typewriter was my vehicle (along with cut and paste, much Wite-Out and correction tape). Columns had to be hand-delivered to the LTM office to Miss Reid. What a mentor she was to me, offering suggestions and words of encouragement and praise.

Since then I have seen many editors and columnists come and go, but Eileen Carlton has led us through the many changes at the paper and to the columns which have occurred since the beginning of the telecommunication age. Thanks also to all the faithful column readers who have followed events (both happy and sad occasions) and even some history in the making here in Hillsboro. I have thoroughly loved writing these many years and hope that the eagerly read town columns continue and one day even return to print.

Andrew McKnight: Nationally acclaimed and Loudoun-based artist Andrew McKnight is known for his exceptional lyrics and the use of music to tell evocative tales with heartfelt passion. The Round Hill Arts Center invites all those interested in poetry, lyrics and other forms of creative writing to spend Saturday afternoon, Oct. 11, 1-4 p.m. with this exceptional artist and see where the music takes you. Admission is $25 in advance (540-338-5050) or $35 at the door. For more information on Andrew McKnight, visit andrewmcknight.net.

Hazardous waste collection: Loudoun County will host a household hazardous waste collection program Saturday, Oct. 18, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Harmony Intermediate School in Hamilton. For information about what you can or cannot bring to the program, click on the following link: www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=742.

Old Stone School: The Hillsboro Old Stone School has risen from the ashes (so to speak) and is looking great. Windows have been replaced, outside scraping and painting are ongoing, inside floors have been sanded and refinished and are drying. You simply must view the photos on the HCA Web site www.hillsborova.org to appreciate the progress. Repairs and construction are anticipated to be completed by mid-October, at which time furniture will be placed, the kitchen will be restocked and unpacking and organizing inventory for events will be undertaken. Your help is needed the weekend of the “unpacking party” as soon as the exact weekend is designated. Meanwhile, entry into the Old Stone School is still prohibited in order to let the floors dry adequately. Patience is a virtue and very soon now the HCA will host a re-opening open house for you to personally view the totally “new” Old Stone School. Those wishing to supplement insurance coverage for repairs incurred from the May 27 accidental fire can donate online via Paypal account or by check on the HCA Web site www.hillsborova.org.

Election: Registered voters in Precinct 303 will vote at Hillsboro Elementary School between the hours of 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Please allow plenty of time to vote as it is anticipated that lines will be long. It will speed up the process if you do your homework ahead of time as there will be many issues on the ballot in addition to president and vice president. Voters will be asked for a form of valid identification: voter registration card, license, or employee badge with photo.

Rummage sale: The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital invites you to attend its 70th annual rummage sale scheduled for Oct. 17-18, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. both days at the Morven Park Equestrian Center just north of Leesburg off U.S. 15 N. All proceeds benefit the hospital. At this point, donations may be brought to Morven Park Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until noon (Oct. 13-15). Donations will not be accepted after noon on Wednesday. Help The Ladies Board celebrate 70 years of giving to the community by donating your usable items to its rummage sale. Something new has been added this year. As usual, for the normal sale hours no admission will be charged, but those opting for ticketed early admission (i.e. 8 to 9 a.m.) will be charged a $5 fee. Tickets for early admission are available at the Inova Loudoun Hospital Gift Shop at Lansdowne, Black Shutter Antiques in Leesburg or at the Twice Is Nice Thrift Shop in Leesburg.

Flu shots: Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Services will be hosting countywide flu shot clinics for adults at several locations and for children 4 and up at the Inova Loudoun Medical Center Leesburg campus or Inova Loudoun Hospital at Lansdowne (not on the mobile health van). Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Flu clinics for children at ILH Lansdowne will be Friday, Oct. 17 (4-8 p.m.), Tuesday, Oct. 28 (6-8 p.m.). The children’s clinic at Inova Loudoun Medical Center in Leesburg will be Friday, Oct. 10, 4-8 p.m. The cost for the flu shot is $25 per person. Seniors with a valid Medicare card will receive a flu shot free of charge. Pneumonia shots will be offered to seniors and those with chronic diseases at a $45 cost. Adults in western Loudoun in need of a flu shot should report to the mobile van at Inova Loudoun Medical Campus in Leesburg, on Cornwall St., Friday, Oct. 10, 4-8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, 9 a.m.- noon inside the Lucketts Community Center, Monday, Oct. 13, 4-8 p.m. at the mobile van adjacent to the Purcellville Government Center, and Monday, Oct. 20, 4-8 p.m. in the mobile van in front of the Middleburg Safeway.

DCC Events: The Douglass Community Center never rests. It invites grades 1-5 to join in a Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 13) trip to the National Geographic Society Museum. The bus leaves at 7 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Cost is $40. All ages are invited to take a ride Saturday, Oct. 18, on the minibus to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and enjoy the festive Halloween atmosphere. The bus leaves at 7 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. Cost is $20. To register or ask questions, call the DCC at 703-771-5913. The DCC also invites you to compete in virtual bowling on the Nintendo Wii. The tournament is Saturday, Nov. 1, 5-8 p.m. at the DCC and is for individuals 5 and older. The fee to participate is $5 per person. Matches will be on projection screens. Preregistration is required by e-mailing dcc@loudoun.gov or by calling 703-771-5913.

Tag sale: Plan to attend the seventh annual Purcellville townwide tag sale Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12. It promises to be a great fall weekend of great shopping and bargains. Participants may opt to stay open for both days and the popular antique flea market will return for two days. Sale hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. For information about the event visit townwidetagsale.com.

Birthdays: Happy birthday wishes this week go out to Calvin Gore, Brett Calhoun, Stephanie Hunter, Matthew Sustek, Benjamin Mergler, Jesse Nason, and Matthew Ware. Enjoy your special days.
