Superb season ends

Western Albemarle swung past Briar Woods in the Region II boys' tennis championship match for the second straight season May 24 in Charlottesville.

The Falcons, winners of the Dulles District regular season and tournament titles, fell to Western Albemarle 5-2 on Saturday. Patrick Melbourne and Patrick Cuillo won in singles play for Briar Woods.

The Falcons advanced to their second straight region championship match by sweeping Monticello 5-0 in the semifinals May 22. Stephen Law, Kyle Slack, David Baroody, Brett Stockman and Melbourne each won in straight sets.


Hokies reach big stage

Virginia Tech's softball team secured its first trip to the Women's College World Series following a 6-1 victory over sixth ranked Michigan in the NCAA Tournament Super Regional round May 25 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Purcellville's own Jessica Everhart is the starting center fielder for the Hokies. Everhart drove in a run and made a couple of splendid defensive plays in the decisive game of the best-of-three series.

The Hokies lost game one, 1-0, May 24 before winning two straight games May 25 to advance. Virginia Tech (49-17) will play Texas A&M May 29 at 3 p.m. to open the eight-team World Series in Oklahoma City. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Bulldogs advance

Stone Bridge defeated top seeded Herndon 1-0 in the Northern Region boys' soccer quarterfinals May 22. Nick Giffen scored the winning goal midway through the second half off an assist from Ronnie Shaban.

The Bulldog defense, along with goalie Matt Miscione, held strong to help secure the shutout. Stone Bridge (16-1-1) will play at National District champion Yorktown in the region semifinals May 28 at 7 p.m.


Raiders stay alive

Loudoun County scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a tie and win 3-1 versus Orange County in the Region II softball quarterfinals May 26 in Orange. 

Pitcher Lindsey Holtz allowed just three hits and an unearned run in a complete-game victory. Hope Flanagan doubled home Holly Norris for the Raiders' first run in the third inning, and Rochelle Latka and Kristen Gorman scored in the seventh.

County will play at Brentsville in the semifinals May 28 at 7 p.m.
