Park View captures Region II track title

Park View senior Natalie Baird swept the throwing events at the Region II track and field meet May 21 at Heritage High School in Leesburg.

Baird's victories in the discus and shot put were expected, considering she is one of top high school throwers in the nation.

What may have come as more of a surprise was the Patriots' overall dominance in the throwing events.

Park View held down four of the top five spots in the discus, along with the top two positions in the shot put, accumulating 44 of its 75 overall points for the meet.

The Patriots needed nearly every one of those points, finishing two points ahead of Brentsville and three points ahead of Dulles District meet champ Heritage for the Region II girls' championship.

"We focus on technique and form, and if you don't have that, it's hard to compete. Our coaching staff is phenomenal in teaching technique,” Park View coach Randy Kerico said of his staff, including assistant coach Brian Baird – Natalie's father -- who works with the throwers.

Louisa County won the boys' title with 89 points as Broad Run (53) enjoyed the best local boys finish in third place.

Along with Natalie Baird's dual throwing titles, Lauren Tomlinson placed second in the shot put and was third in the discus. Julia Anyaugo finished second in the discus, and Meredith Oare placed fifth.

Anyaugo also finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Charlene Fowler scored in the 100 dash and long jump, and Megan Barnes was fifth in the 800 run. Baird, Barnes, Anyaugo and Fowler combined for a third-place finish in the 400 relay.

After repeating as Region II champions, the Patriots now head to the Virginia Group AA track and field meet with a chance to repeat as state champions. The state meet is May 30-31 at Harrisonburg High School.

"The girls have been working pretty hard this season. You just hope they peak at the right time,” Kerico said. “If we pull our weight, we should be able to have a good showing."

Viking girls place third

The Loudoun Valley Vikings girls' team finished third with 71 points at the Northwest Region meet May 23 at E.C. Glass High School in Charlottesville.

The Viking boys finished in 20th place with 10 points. Osbourn Park's girls (88 points) and Albemarle's boys (73.5) won team championships.

Lauren Privette and Theresa Trader showed strong for Valley. Privette won the triple jump and placed second in the long jump. Trader topped the field in the 100 hurdles and was runner-up in the 300 hurdles. Privette and Trader also joined Margaret Leonard and Meghan Sullivan in winning the 400 relay.

Wayne Savage delivered the Viking boys' top finish when he placed fifth in the shot put.

Bulldogs win relay

Andre Best, Tyler Smith, Sean Kinnebrew and Daniel Allen combined to win the boys' 400 relay, highlighting Stone Bridge's performance at the Northern Region meet May 22-23 at Lake Braddock High School in Burke.

The Bulldog boys placed sixth overall with 35 points and the girls were eighth with 38.5 points. South Lakes (93.5) won the boys' title, and host Lake Braddock (101) won the girls' championship.

Naomi Session earned points in three individual events (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump) and also ran the final leg on the Bulldogs' third-place 400 relay team. Trevor Springman placed third in the shot put.
