Relaxing in the dentist's chair: Round Hill's first dentist turns an often-dreaded chore into a day at the spa

Walking into the renovated home on 2 W. Loudoun St. in Round Hill, you might think you're walking into a spa. With the scents of aromatherapy and the sights of a warm fireplace and serene decor, the only initial indication that this is a dentist's office is the sign on the front lawn.

Sean Grady opened his aesthetic dental practice April 1, with the intention of bringing western Loudoun residents a relaxing, calm environment while providing experience and personalized dental services.

“I was at a larger, busier practice in Leesburg for 15 years, but I wanted to spend more time with people and give them more personalized care,” Grady said as he relaxed in one of the two treatment rooms at his office that are equipped with high-tech massage dental chairs, tons of natural light and water features to add to the calming atmosphere.

Grady said his practice is a hybrid office, providing both general and aesthetic dental services for teens and adults. Services range from cleaning and whitening to orthodontics and smile makeovers. The practice does not provide surgical procedures, root canals or pediatric work.

While he has been in the dental industry for more than 15 years, he continues to educate himself.

“To become good at aesthetics, a dentist needs continuing education,” he explained. “For the past 10 years, I have done hands-on courses.” His Web site lists places where he has received this continuing education, including the Seattle Institute for Advanced Education in Dentistry from 2002 to 2006.

He also holds numerous honors and association memberships. His site lists a ranking among “Top Aesthetic Dentists in America” from 2003 to 2007 by the Consumer Research Council of America.

The feel of the office is one of the main areas Grady prides himself on – coming in second only to his work.

“I have created something,” he said. “It's not any more expensive – just a nicer environment.”

He said at a recent appointment, one of his patients was so relaxed, she fell asleep in the chair.

Grady says he is not the cheapest dentist out there, but he is also not the most expensive. Prices vary, but tooth whitening starts at $125, and cleanings start at $100. His office accepts all types of insurance, and financing packages are available.

The typical appointment at Grady's office begins with a warm welcome and offerings of beverages while the patient fills out paperwork in the lounge area complete with cozy chairs and a warm fireplace. The patient then meets with Grady in his office.

“We talk about their goals and needs,” Grady said. “It is a dialog to get to know the patient.”

After the discussion, the patient is invited to relax in the massage dental chair while digital photos and X-rays are taken. (X-rays are complimentary on the first visit, and photos are always free.)

Grady then will do a comprehensive exam and will go over the treatment plan and options -- after the patient is given a hot towel to freshen up.

“My staff and I are here to educate, not to sell things,” Grady added. “I am a conservative dentist. I put myself in the shoes of the patient and ask myself, 'What would I want.' I don't like being pressured or being rushed.”
