New Hamilton bakery offers tasty delights in the small town

The community of Hamilton has overwhelmingly supported the new Hamilton's Sweet Delights, say store owners and Hamilton residents Patti Lovelady and Georjan Overman.

“So many people have come in and showed their support by saying they come here to buy from us before going anywhere else,” Overman said.

The two women opened Hamilton's Sweet Delights in the beginning of March after being introduced at the Hamilton Book Club in December. Overman was looking for a place to sell her truffles and candies, and Lovelady had experience in catering.

“Our talents fit together well,” Overman said.

In January, the two signed a lease for the quaint space at 52-B W. Colonial Highway, and in March they opened their doors.

“It was surprising how many people came in [opening weekend],” Lovelady said. “It was encouraging.”

Lovelady said that getting the business started in just three months “was a whirlwind. But it is a sign of how people in Hamilton want retail. The support by the community is unbelievable.”

The location, Overman says, is agreeable for the business, but it is the product that really draws people in.

Sweet Delights offers an assortment of cookies, candies, cakes and breads.

The top sellers, according to Lovelady's sales analysis, shows that people in Hamilton are flocking to the store for the Hamilton cream bar, harvest cookies, macadamia and chocolate chip cookies, and raspberry cream cheese bars.

“We are a far stretch from health food,” Lovelady added, after listing the favorites.

While the Sweet Delights store is nice for now, the two women agreed that moving is a possibility. The current location does not house a kitchen, so the tasty treats are made in nearby kitchens such as the local fire station and the Carver Center in Purcellville.

“We will be here a couple more years before moving,” Overman said, adding that it will give the women time to establish themselves.

Lovelady chimed in jokingly: “But then we will franchise and take over the world.”

In the meantime, Lovelady and Overman are set on building up their product, mainly by asking customers what they want.

On request, the store now offers fresh-baked breads, as well as cakes made by two women in town.

And while the community has given so much support to Lovelady and Overman in their new endeavor, the two are giving back by showcasing and selling artwork from the Loudoun Sketch Club in the store.

They also are providing desserts for Lowry's Crab Shack at 420 W. Colonial Highway.
