Lovettsville pond in peril
A collapsed pipe has drained a 3-acre pond northwest of Lovettsville of about 70 percent of its water.“We got a call [May 15],” said Mike McPeak, president of the Lovettsville Game Protective Association, which maintains the pond. “A neighbor across the road noticed that the pond level was low.”
The Lovettsville Game Protective Assocation Pond is normally 10 feet deep at its deepest point.
The pond has lost about 5 feet of water, McPeak said, and at some points is only a foot deep.
The pipe's collapse could have been caused by recent heavy rainfall, he said.
The pond, at the intersection of Georges Mill and Stevens roads, is man-made and home to trout, bass, crappie and catfish.
“We've lost a substantial amount of the fish,” McPeak said.
Repairs to the pond will cost thousands of dollars, McPeak said. But he hopes that the repairs can be made quickly, limiting further disruption to activities at the pond.
In April the 11th Annual Fishing Derby was held at the pond, which brought in a crowd of about 80 children.
This past week the association had to cancel two events -- one with a troop of Boy Scouts, the other with a Loudoun Country Day School class -- because of water-level concerns.
The Lovettsville Game Protective Association, a nonprofit, is asking for donations to help pay for repairs to the pond.
Donations can be sent to the LGPA Pond Fund at Wachovia Bank, attention Linda Tribby, 611 E. Main St., Purcellville, VA 20132.
