Honors and accolades

New grads: Lucas McLaughlin, of Leesburg, graduated from Eastern University, St. David's, Pa., with a degree in political science.

Meredith Kope and Lisa Bethune, both of Leesburg, graduated form Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg. Kope took a degree in environmental science and will be assistant director of The FARM Institute at Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Bethune graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She will continue graduate studies in epidemiology at the University of Maryland.

Green awards: Melissa Wright, of Loudoun Valley High School, won a first place Rachel Carson Award from the Newton Marasco Foundation for her work to raise money for the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and to develop a nature trail at the Susanne R. Kane Nature Preserve in Purcellville.

Second place went to Emily Zatorski, of Loudoun County High School. Third place was Chris Potts, of Loudoun Valley High School. Jennifer Weatherly, of Dominion High School, was named a Rachel Carson Scholar for her leadership in stenciling storm drains in eastern Loudoun , and for her volunteer work at the Sterling Recycling Center.
