Singing auditions: If you're a singer who sings very well and reads music, the Master Singers of Virginia invite you to audition for their upcoming season. Singers of all voice types are encouraged to audition.
The Master Singers of Virginia are directed by Erik Reid Jones and are known as the premier a cappella choral ensemble in Northern Virginia, concentrating on 20th and 21st century choral music. They perform three major concert programs each season as well as other engagements throughout Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C., area.
The concert series scheduled to be performed this season includes Benjamin Britten's "A Boy Was Born"; Francis Poulenc's "Mass in G Major"; William Byrd's "Mass for Five Voices"; Shakespeare songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Martin and Jaakko Mantyjarvi; and more.
For more information, visit www.msva.org. To schedule an audition, call Mary Ellen Bufalo, president, at 703-729-5269 or Meomusic@aol.com.
MusicFest: The Loudoun Summer MusicFest presents Smashmouth this Sunday night at 6 p.m. on the lawn in front of Belmont Country Club. The gates open at 5 p.m., unless you have a season pass or Gold Circle ticket; if so, you can get in 15 minutes early. The show begins at 7 p.m. No coolers are allowed, as all proceeds from the concerts – including concession sales – go to local Loudoun County charities. General admission tickets are $15 and Gold Circle tickets are $35. There are also various levels of season passes available. For more information, visit www.liveatbelmont.com.
If you purchased tickets for last week's canceled Creedence Clearwater Revisited show, they will be honored at any other concert this summer, or you can get a refund through your place of purchase.
Caribbean Days: Callaloo Cuisine will be the focal point of a larger Caribbean Days festival on May 17 in the Southern Walk plaza, located in the Broadlands. From 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be live steel band performances, Stiltz walkers, limbo dancing, face painting, a Tiki Island rock wall and more. Van Metre Properties will be giving away a free Caribbean cruise. For more information, visit www.callaloocuisine.com.
Farmers Market: Mark your calendars for June 7. That's when our very own Ashburn Farmers Market opens, 8 a.m-noon, at the Ryan Park Shopping Center in the Kaiser Permanente parking lot. The market will be open there on Saturdays until October, so come on out for fresh products and meat grown by local farmers.
