The Tys that bind
Stone Bridge pitcher Ty Weaver announced May 8 that he will play baseball for West Virginia University beginning in the fall.
Weaver, a 6-foot-8-inch starter who entered action on May 8 with a 7-0 record and a 2.25 ERA with nearly a strikeout per inning, joins fellow Bulldog righty Tyler Basso in pledging to pitch for the Mountaineers.
“I liked the school at first, then when I thought baseball was an option, once they gave me an offer, I jumped on it,” said Weaver, who began his Stone Bridge career as a catcher before a growth spurt prompted a move to the mound.
Weaver and Basso looked toward continuing their friendship with a new club in Morgantown.
“We've already been working together as a team, so hopefully we can carry that over to West Virginia,” Basso said.
Weaver concurred.
“We're good friends, so having a tight-knit team to start off with, I think that'd be awesome,” Weaver said.
The formidable duo has combined to pitch the Bulldogs, who claimed their first Liberty District regular season title May 5, to more than half their squad's victories on the year.
Stone Bridge coach Sam Plank, a WVU alumnus, spoke of the progress Weaver has made.
“It is amazing how far Ty has come in just two years of pitching,” Plank said in a press release. “I think if Ty continues to work he has a chance to be a special pitcher.”
