Gordon honored
Bridgewater College senior Caitlin Gordon received the Harold and Carol Lehman Sportsmanship Award during the annual Awards Convocation April 29.
The award is given to a male or female student who demonstrates respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility before, during and after athletic contests.
Gordon is a 2004 graduate of Loudoun Valley High School. A health and exercise science major with a minor in nutrition and wellness, Gordon was a four-year member of the women's soccer team.
Gordon, who graduated May 11, served as a soccer team captain for the past two years, earning All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honorable mention honors both seasons.
A great citizen
Heritage High School senior Thomas Christensen was one of six recipients of the 2007-08 Wachovia Citizenship Award Scholarships. Christensen will receive a $1,000 scholarship, sponsored by The Virginia High School League in partnership with Wachovia Bank.
Described as a self-starter, intellectually vigorous, committed to social issues and a model citizen, Christensen served his school and community as part of the Gateway Program as an ESL student mentor for a student from Togo. He plans to attend the University of Virginia.
Coaching award
Kathleen Castro, a Loudoun soccer coach for a Under-14 boys' team, received the 2007-2008 Pollin Award presented by Verizon during a halftime ceremony at a Washington Wizards game April 27.
The Pollin Award was named after Irene and Abe Pollin, chairpersons for the Washington Wizards and Verizon Center. It was created to honor those individuals in the Maryland/D.C./Virginia area who show an exemplary level of dedication to their community.
Pride football
There will be a mandatory meeting June 2 at 7 p.m. for all students attending Heritage High School in the fall who plan on trying out for football. This includes incoming freshmen. Officials sought
The Northern Virginia Football Officials Association seeks trainees wishing to become on-field officials and clock operators for the 2008 season. The NVFOA supplies officials for youth, middle school, high school and private school football games throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
Training sessions begin in mid-June. No experience is necessary. Interested men and women 18 and older can download application forms at www.nvfoa.com, or contact Commissioner Dennis Hall at 540-837-1316 or commissioner@nvfoa.com.

The Round Hill Volunteer Fire Department is in need of players and sponsors for its golf tournament May 19 at the Stoneleigh Golf and Country Club. Call 703-216-8339 for details.

The Town of Purcellville Golf Tournament is June 5 (rain date is June 9), at the Loudoun Golf & Country Club. Proceeds will go entirely to the Upper Loudoun Little League.
