Leesburg News: Johnson's sets date for last meal

Johnson's sets date for last meal

Johnson's Charcoal Beef House will serve its last meals May 14. The restaurant will host an open house for customers and friends that Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m., said owner Buddy Sadak. The Town of Leesburg has approved plans to tear down the restaurant and, in its place, build a new Chevy Chase Bank branch with drive-through lanes. The restaurant at 401 E. Market St. has been open since the early 1960s. Memorabilia and other items -- including chairs, kitchen equipment, liqueur and knickknacks -- from the restaurant will be up for auction online at www.rasmus.com May 16 starting at 10 a.m., said Sadak. He said he was not sure when demolition on the building would begin.

Church plans denied

For a second time, the Planning Commission has rejected the Phase 2 development plans for Loudoun Baptist Temple in northeast Leesburg. Developers were to expand the existing 5,642-square-foot building at 412 Edwards Ferry Road by adding 24,172 square feet.

Church representatives did not get approval at the March Planning Commission meeting because town staff said neighbors of the church had not been given enough notice for the public hearing.

The plans failed to gain approval at the May 1 Planning Commission meeting after commissioners said the project was too large.

During the public hearing May 1, residents from the Lowenbach neighborhood complained that the project could cause traffic problems in their community and would not provide the amount of parking needed for the congregation.

Church developers said the parking provided in the design plans met town requirements.

Loudoun Baptist Temple developers will have another chance to go before the Planning Commission at its May 15 meeting.

Land annexation

Leesburg and Loudoun County representatives are scheduled to meet May 7 at 5 p.m. for more talks on annexing land into the town. The county's Board of Supervisors voted Nov. 20 in favor of working with Leesburg on plans to annex 2,500 acres of county land south of Leesburg into the town limits.

Since then, county and town representatives have met with residents living in the area that may be annexed – roughly between Route 7 and the Dulles Greenway -- to hash out plans and answer questions.
