Locals spark Lynchburg

Lynchburg College has qualified for the NCAA Division III softball tournament and are seeded first in a seven-team, double-elimination bracket to be contested at Methodist University in North Carolina starting May 8.

The Hornets feature three local players – junior first baseman Tara Campbell (Loudoun County), sophomore pitcher Missy O'Hara (Loudoun County) and freshman shortstop Sara Spicer (Loudoun Valley).
Campbell has been one of Lynchburg's top players this season, batting .368 with seven homers and 30 RBIs.

The Hornets (36-5) won the  Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament and are currently ranked seventh nationally.


Madigan selected

Broad Run High School senior Eric Madigan has been selected to play in the US Lacrosse National Senior Showcase June 20-21 at Benedictine University in Chicago, Ill.

Madigan will play on the South team with other high school seniors from Maryland to Florida. 

A four-year varsity starter for Broad Run, Madigan was a 2007 U.S. Lacrosse High School All-American. He will play lacrosse for Sacred Heart University. The Pioneers are Division I members of the Colonial Athletic Association.


Pride football

There will be a mandatory meeting June 2 at 7 p.m. for all students attending Heritage High School in the fall who plan on trying out for football. This includes incoming freshmen. Basso commits to WVU

Stone Bridge right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Basso recently committed to play baseball for the West Virginia University Mountaineers of the Big East Conference.

Basso, a third baseman when not toiling on the mound, is 6-1 with a 0.93 ERA, walking only five batters while striking out 57 in 45 innings.

Bulldog coach Sam Plank, a WVU alum, said in a press release, "[Tyler] will be a great asset to the West Virginia University baseball team. It makes me proud to think about one of my guys playing for my alma mater."


Schooling show

Officials sought

The Northern Virginia Football Officials Association seeks trainees wishing to become on-field officials and clock operators for the 2008 season. The NVFOA supplies officials for youth, middle school, high school and private school football games throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
