Purcellville News: Watch your speed

Watch your speed

Solar-powered speed signs are on duty on South Maple, South 23rd and North 21st streets. Drivers will immediately know their speed and – the town hopes – slow down when appropriate.

Wastewater

Samer Beidas, director of Public Works, reports that the Basham Simms Wastewater Facility meets all Virginia Department of Environmental Quality standards and regulations and has been released from a 2003 Special Order by Consent.

When the plant opened in early 2003, Beidas said, the effluent -- the treated water released back to Goose Creek -- exceeded some state requirements for ammonia, nitrogen. In addition, DEQ worked out a plan with the town to get the infill and infiltration problem (runoff from heavy rains getting back into the sewer pipes) corrected.

The effluent quality has met all standards for two years now, Beidas said, and the town is ahead of schedule dealing with the infill and infiltration issue.

Heritage celebration

The Purcellville Preservation Association is hosting an all-day town-wide centennial celebration May 17. Lineup for the children's parade starts at 9 a.m. at Emerick Elementary School, and the fun goes on all day on 21st and 23rd streets, at the Gazebo and the Train Station. The celebration will feature guided historic tours, food, music and activities for children and adults including a sack race, dress up opportunities and cow milking. A trolley leaves for Lincoln at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., then the Old Timers Round Table kicks off at 3:30 p.m. in front of the Train Station.

Volunteers are still needed. Go to www.ppa-va.org for details.

Cleanup

Town council members and town staff -- with partners from Keep Loudoun Beautiful, Loudoun Valley High School and its environmental science teachers, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- collected more than 200 bags of trash and 50 car and tractor tires from Purcellville's streets and streambeds in a two-week period, April 12 through April 28. All has been taken to the landfill.

Moving on up

Anyone who has thoughts, ideas or suggestions for how to get around town in the future – in cars, on buses, pedaling bikes, walking – is invited to a public input session on the town's long-range transportation plan June 14, noon to 3 p.m. at Town Hall. Small and large groups, facilitated by town staff, Town-wide Transportation Plan Advisory Committee members and consultants, will identify the needs for transportation improvements in the future.
