School official charged with failure to report suspected child abuse or neglect

A Freedom High School assistant principal has been charged with failure to report suspected child abuse or neglect, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Ting-Yi Oei, 59, of Reston, allegedly held evidence of an inappropriate cell-phone photo of a juvenile female Freedom High School student. Oei apparently obtained the photo from another student at the school but never informed the child’s parents, the Loudoun Sheriff’s Office school resource deputy assigned to the school or Child Protective Services; which is required by law.

Oei allegedly obtained the information regarding the photo on March 14. The Sheriff's Office became aware of the incident nearly three weeks later through a third party.

The charge is an unclassified misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine up to $500.

According to Loudoun County Public Schools spokesman Wayde Byard, Oei has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending resolution of the case.
