Economic stimulus scam hitting county residents' e-mail
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be wary of telephone calls and e-mails about the economic stimulus package.
The Sheriff’s Office has learned that some county residents have received an e-mail claiming to be from the IRS.
The e-mail tells recipients they are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund. It then asks them to click on a link to fill out a form, apparently for direct deposit into their bank account.
The e-mail, according to the IRS, appears to be an identity-theft scheme to obtain recipients’ personal and financial information so the scammers can steal money from the victims’ accounts.
According to the IRS, taxpayers do not have to fill out a separate form to get a stimulus payment or have it directly deposited. Remember that the IRS will never call or e-mail you to ask for your Social Security number or bank account information.
There are no reports of Loudoun County residents who received this e-mail falling victim to the scam. If you believe you were a victim, call the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021 to report it.
