Three Bulldogs select colleges

Stone Bridge High School football coach Mickey Thompson saw three of his players sign collegiate letters of intent during a ceremony Thursday at the school.

Running back Kareem Alexander, a first-team Liberty District selection as a senior, has earned a full scholarship to Dodge City Community College in Kansas, a two-year program known for developing players for four-year colleges.

Alexander, a transfer to Stone Bridge from McLean after his sophomore season, spoke about relocating to a distant locale to continue his career.

"It's basically starting a whole new life over there [in Kansas]," he remarked. "I don't know anybody, I don't know what's going to go on. So I just got to work my tail off to exceed my limit."

Alexander rushed for nearly 900 yards last season despite sharing carries with Virginia Tech-bound Jeron Gouveia.

Wide receiver Ryan Moody, Bulldog quarterback Patrick Thompson's primary target last season, will take his skills to The College of William & Mary as a preferred walk-on.

Mickey Thompson mentioned the regard his counterparts in Williamsburg have for Moody, another first-team All-Liberty choice.

"The coaches down there are very excited about what he can do for them," Thompson said.

Moody, who caught three touchdowns in Stone Bridge's 38-0 victory against Potomac in the Division 5 state title game last December, lauded the coach for the effort he expends on his players' behalves.

"Coach Thompson puts in the hours in the off-season to help recruiters see my film, to talk with coaches," he said. "It's tremendous how much work he puts in to helping his seniors get that scholarship."

Also achieving preferred walk-on status is defensive back Kevin Elliott, who will attend Concord University, a Division II program in Athens, W.Va.

Elliott, a second-team All-Liberty choice, spoke of the aspects of the Stone Bridge program he will take to the next level.

"Everything," he stated. "How we do things every day, the work ethic in practice and the weight room, all that."

Elliott provided a game-changing interception versus Phoebus in last season's state semifinal, as the Phantoms were driving deep in Stone Bridge territory holding a 24-21 lead in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs rallied for a 38-24 victory, snapping Phoebus’ 20-game winning streak.

"If Kevin's not here," Thompson said, "I really wonder if we win a state championship."

The trio joins a long list of Bulldogs who have moved on to play college football.

"It's like a family [at Stone Bridge]," Moody commented. "This program's one of the best in the state, so I can take a lot of things from it."
