Stone Bridge baseball starts hot

The Stone Bridge Bulldogs made quite an opening statement March 15 during the first day of the Alexandria City Baseball Championship at West Potomac High School.

The Bulldogs defeated Bishop O'Connell, 12-5, in their first game of the day before topping Edison, 13-2, in their night cap.

The tournament continues through March 19 when the championship game is slated to be contested. West Potomac is hosting all of the games.

Stone Bridge joins Robert E. Lee, Bishop O'Connell, Edison and West Potomac in the five-team field.

The Bulldogs scored 12 runs on 12 hits and eight walks in the victory over Bishop O'Connell.

Tyler Basso delivered a two-run double, and Matt Irwin followed with his first varsity career home run to highlight a four-run third inning.

The Bulldogs put the game away in the sixth when they scored four more runs. Freshman J.J. White drove in two of the runs with his first varsity hit.

Ty Weaver started on the mound for the Bulldogs, and Mike Palmer earned the win in relief.

Stone Bridge needed just five innings to finish off Edison in the second game, bringing the 10-run rule into effect.

Johnny Bladel was the winning pitcher and also belted a three-run double in the contest. The Bulldogs stole 15 bases in the two games combined.
