A special meet for youth track team
The Virginia Special Forces Track Club, based in Loudoun County, placed no lower than fourth in any event at the Hershey Regional Championships June 14 at Yorktown High School in Arlington.
The consistent finishes marked the first time in the club's 10-year history that it placed an athlete among the top four in every event at a meet.
“This shows track and field is being taken seriously in this area. The kids are more committed to track and field and more excited about track and field now,” Special Forces coach and co-founder Nick Savage said.
“They are not just using [track] to gain speed for other sports,” Savage continued. “I think you are going to hear a lot of these young kids helping their high schools in their future.”
Jackie Deffer started off with a bang, placing second in the 1,600-meter run in a time of five minutes, 46 seconds. Deffer followed that up with a time of 2:45 in the 800 run to finish third.
Sprinters Nick Arnold, Alexis Vaughn, Jessica Rolle and Luke Cowne placed third for their respective age divisions in the 100 dash, while Eric Acton and Imani Tomlinson finished fourth.
Janay Jackson crossed the finish line first for the girls' ages 9-10 group in the 400 run. In the 200 dash, Britt Savage placed third in the girls' ages 13-14 division, while Anthony Jackson blazed to a winning finish of 24 seconds for the boys' division.
Special Forces won the 400-meter relay in the boys' ages 9-10 division, and also swept the relay in the 13-14 division.
In the field events, Luke Cowne took gold in the softball throw with a new team record of 184 feet. In the standing broad jump, Mark Melbourne won the standing broad jump in the boys' 9-10 division, and Anthony Cassine, Vaughn, Rolle, Savage set new team records and produced first-place finishes in their events.
Special Forces qualified more than 20 members for the Hershey State Championship June 28 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
