Politics: Republican turnout, Turner wins Loudoun by one vote
Republicans double Democrats' turnoutLoudoun Republicans are excited by the fact that twice as many voters took part in their congressional primary on June 10 as did in the Democratic primary on the same day.
"Democrats and others who suggest Loudoun Republicans' enthusiasm is on the wane, need to consider the overwhelming results," Loudoun County Republican Committee Chairman Glen Caroline wrote on the committee's Web site.
Nearly 5,500 Loudouners voted in the Republican's 10th District primary, compared to the 2,600 voters who participated in the Democratic primary.
"Our party is now united, and ready to roll up our sleeves and do the hard work in the trenches to elect John McCain, Jim Gilmore, and Frank Wolf on November 4th," Caroline also wrote.
Turner wins Loudoun
Though he lost his bid to face U.S. Frank Wolf (R-10th) in November to fellow-Democrat Judy Feder, Mike Turner did manage to win Loudoun during the June 10 congressional primary. His margin of victory, according to Virginia's State Board of Elections: one vote.
"Now, that's a mandate," joked Turner, who said he is "open to all possibilities" regarding his political future.
On Loudoun, he said he was pleased to have carried his home of Waterford "two to one." He also won precincts in Ashburn, Leesburg, Lovettsville, Lucketts, South Riding and Sterling.
"I think a lot of people liked me," he said. "But they had already made up their minds to vote for Judy."
As for the county's other candidate in the recent primaries, Ashburn's Vern McKinley lost Loudoun to Republican primary winner Wolf by about 80 percentage points.
