Kaine holding town hall meeting on transportation

Gov. Tim Kaine (D) will hold a town hall meeting in Leesburg on June 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on the topic of transportation.

The meeting will take place in the auditorium of Harper Parker Middle School, 701 Potomac Station Drive.

The meeting is one of several Kaine is holding across the state about the General Assembly's special session on transportation scheduled for June 23 in Richmond.

Staff from the Virginia Department of Treasury's Unclaimed Property Division will also be at the meeting to help residents check for money, stocks, bonds, dividends, utility deposits, insurance proceeds and tangible property being held by the state.

Everyone is invited to attend.

New hire

Supervisor Stevens Miller (D-Dulles) has brought on to his staff the former energy and sustainability coordinator for Honolulu, Hawaii.

According to a release from Miller's office, Steve Holmes will be tasked with putting together a package of energy initiatives with the goal of saving Loudoun taxpayers money.

Holmes, a former member of the Honolulu City Council, lives in Ashburn.

Burning ban

Open burning is prohibited throughout the county and its seven towns between now and Aug. 31, according to the Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office. Grills, chimineas, covered outdoor fireplace devices and campfires are not affected by this ban. Call 703-737-8600 for more information.

War monument

The Board of Supervisors June 9 approved the design and location of a Revolutionary War monument slated for the courthouse grounds in Leesburg.

The statue, designed by artist Jay Hall Carpenter, features a man going off to war with one arm around his son and the other around his wife, who appears crestfallen.

Supervisor Kelly Burk (D-Leesburg) was concerned that the woman did not look "strong" enough.

"She has her head down and she looks pretty beat," she said.

However, other board members agreed most people would have similar expressions if one of their loved ones was going off to war.

"I don't see it as demeaning to women at all," said Supervisor Jim Burton (I-Blue Ridge).

Members of the Patriot Project Committee said they hope to dedicate the monument by July 4, 2010.

"I think that would be a bonus for bringing more businesses into the county."
