Pappas swings to state runner-up finish

Loudoun Valley junior Kiersten Pappas and Mills Godwin senior Katie Blow braved the intense heat for nearly three hours June 6 at Jefferson District Park in Falls Church, as they traded strokes in the Virginia AAA girls' singles tennis championship.

When the match finally ended, Blow had outlasted Pappas in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the title. Even though Pappas fell one set short of the ultimate goal, it was still a special season for the Viking junior.

Pappas, the Northwest Region singles champion, easily defeated Kathleen Dawson of Ocean Lakes High School, 6-0, 6-2, June 4 in the state quarterfinal round. Pappas advanced to the state final following a semifinal victory against South County's Michelle Nguyen. Pappas led Nguyen 2-0 in the third set June 5 after the players split the first two sets when Nguyen retired with an injury.

Pappas also helped Loudoun Valley win the Cedar Run District and Northwest Region team championships this spring. The Vikings took an undefeated record into the AAA semifinals, where their season ended in a 5-0 loss against Thomas Jefferson. Pappas played No. 1 singles for Valley and also teamed with Juliana Jacangelo at No. 1 doubles.
