Park View explodes for six goals in region final
The Park View Patriots continued their thrilling run through the playoffs with a 6-1 victory against the Brentsville Tigers in the Region II boys' soccer championship game May 30 in Sterling.
After placing second in the Dulles District regular season standings, the Patriots have run off six consecutive wins to claim the Dulles and Region II tournament titles and secure a spot in the state playoffs.
"We were up for this game," Park View coach Arturo Jimenez said. "These guys that have been here for a long time wanted this game a lot. And we played the way we needed to play."
Senior Alex Velasco was one of three Patriots to score twice in Friday's victory. Velasco netted both of his tallies in the opening half to give Park View a 2-0 lead at halftime.
"This was definitely one of our better performances. We came in here and said we are going to play our game, and we did, and we got good results," said Velasco, who will play soccer at Virginia Military Institute next season. "It's just so much fun when everything is clicking."
After Brentsville trimmed the margin to 2-1 less than two minutes into the second half, the Patriots responded with four unanswered goals to close out the game. Senior Andres Contreras and freshman Jose Herrera combined for four goals in the second half.
Contreras appeared to be lost for the rest of Friday's game at halftime as he limped to the intermission huddle with his right knee wrapped with ice.
But Contreras returned about 10 minutes into the second half and scored twice during the final 30 minutes of play.
“He just wanted to play hard and go at it,” Jimenez said. “He has a lot of heart and a lot of determination. They weren't going to deny him.”
Park View earned the right to host a Virginia AA quarterfinal round game June 3 with the win. Check page B1 for a score from the Patriots' quarterfinal game versus Grafton.
"Our next goal is definitely states. It's going to take us playing this game the way we've been playing, just keeping the ball on the ground," Velasco said. "I don't think anyone in the state can play the ball as well as we can when we play a good game."
