Police and fire briefs

The following news happened in Loudoun's public safety fields throughout the week:

Cats shot in Sterling

Two cats have been shot with pellet guns in Sterling since July 16, and Loudoun County Animal Control is looking for the shooter or shooters, spokeswoman Laura Rizer said.

Overnight July 16 into July 17, a cat was shot in the 20000 block of Great Falls Forest Drive. Its owner found it at 8 a.m. and took it to a veterinarian, where it had to be put to sleep, Rizer said.

Then, on July 24, about noon, another cat was found shot in the 200 block of Elizabeth Court. Its owner took it to a veterinarian, and it is recovering from its injuries, Rizer said.

Animal Control officers are unsure if the shootings are related, Rizer said.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call 703-777-0406.

Bevel hearing postponed

The sentencing hearing for the Rev. James Luther Bevel has been postponed to Oct. 15 at 10 a.m.

Bevel, 71, a civil rights leader, was convicted in Loudoun County Circuit Court April 10 of incest for having sex with one of his daughters when she was a teenager in the 1990s.

Bevel was supposed to be sentenced July 25, but a psychiatric report conducted on him was not made available for him to read far enough in advance of the sentencing.

The sentencing Oct. 15 is scheduled to last from four to six hours.

Prowler spotted in Ashburn

Residents in the Ashburn Farm area should be on the lookout for prowlers because of two recent incidents, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

On July 11, deputies were called to Cherrystone Place for a report of a prowler. The teenage victim said she left her house about 2:15 a.m. and saw a man she didn't know sitting in a chair on the porch. The man grabbed her but fled after a struggle, Troxell said.

The victim said the man was about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a chubby build and was wearing all dark clothing. Deputies searched the area but didn't find anyone, Troxell said.

Then, on July 18, several friends were outside a house on Wild Meadow Court when they saw someone they didn't know dressed in dark clothing and walking around the home, Troxell said.

The area was searched, but no one was found.

Investigators are not sure if the two incidents are related, and they are researching other suspicious-person calls in the county, Troxell said.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity or a suspicious person is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 703-777-1021.

Those who have information on the incidents described above are asked to call investigators at 703-777-0475.

Intruder stabbed

A man has been charged with forcing his way into an Ashburn home July 28 and assaulting his estranged girlfriend and her mother. The girlfriend's mother stabbed him during the altercation.

After he was stabbed at the house in the 42000 block of Redfield Street, Andrew Michael Skehan, 25, of Washington, D.C., drove himself to Inova Loudoun Hospital, where he was treated for a stab wound on his shoulder, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said.

After he was treated, deputies arrested him, charging him with burglary and two counts of assault. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Country club fire

A fire destroyed a large maintenance building and most of its contents at the Ritz Carlton Golf and Country Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie July 25.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, Loudoun County Fire-Rescue spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

Fire-rescue units were called to 22680 Beidler Drive about 8:45 p.m. They started to attack the fire from the inside of the building but had to move to the outside because it was spreading so fast, Sternbeck said. They got the fire under control about 10:30 p.m.

No one was injured, and there is no estimate on the damage yet.
