Charity plans to name subdivision for shooting victim
A tiny cluster of homes that will be built for disadvantaged families in the village of Saint Louis in western Loudoun may be named for one of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.
Loudoun Habitat for Humanity plans to construct five homes on Saint Louis Road and name the subdivision after Erin Peterson, one of 33 people killed during last year's rampage at the Blacksburg school. The college freshman, who lived in Centreville, was buried in Rock Hill Cemetery near Round Hill, where her grandfather, Vernon Peterson, is the caretaker.
Habitat for Humanity's project manager for the community, Bud Green, of Hamilton, said the 3-acre site is next to the Virginia Department of Transportation facility in Saint Louis.
He said a road connecting the community to Saint Louis Road also would bear the name Erin Peterson.
If the county approves the plans, he said work could begin early next year.
Celeste Peterson, of Centreville, said her daughter had relatives in Saint Louis on her father's side and had visited the mostly African American community often while growing up in Fairfax County.
She said her daughter reveled in community service. Before her death, she had planned to travel to New Orleans to aid in the cleanup after Hurricane Katrina struck that city.
Erin, her mother said, would have been proud to have her name associated with a Habitat for Humanity project.
"She would be extremely pleased by this," she said. "She was all about helping other people."
