Celebration planned for new meeting, recreation center

A grand-opening event will take place July 19 starting at 10 a.m. for the new Dulles South Multipurpose Center.

The new 24,000-square-foot facility is home to the Arcola Community Center and Arcola Senior Activity Center and includes classrooms, meeting rooms and a recreation area.

Festivities include a ribbon-cutting, tours, refreshments, games, old-fashioned snow cone and cotton candy machines, and a host of giant inflatables.

The center is at 24950 Riding Center Drive in South Riding.

Grass ordinance

The Board of Supervisors decided July 15 to move forward with a plan to create a new tall-grass ordinance.

The ordinance would allow the county to set a maximum allowable height for grass on residents' lawns at 12 inches. A public hearing will take place in September.

If approved, the ordinance would only apply to Loudoun's suburban communities.

Currently, the county may ask a resident to cut his or her grass only if the lawn poses a health or safety hazard to the public.

Digital county

Loudoun is one of the nation's most technology-savvy counties in the nation.

A national survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and National Association of Counties placed Loudoun government first for the county's population size for delivering services to its residents in increasingly innovative ways, especially through Loudoun's Web site.

Some of the newer services offered through www.loudoun.gov include online bidding for items from Loudoun's Surplus Store and an online job application system, which allows applicants to create and save a profile that can be updated and reused to apply for future jobs.

About 3 million people visit the county's Web site annually.

Hazardous waste

Loudoun's solid waste management office will be accepting hazardous household materials July 19 at Heritage High School in Leesburg from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Waste that will be accepted includes paints, stains, cleaners and fuels.

Used motor oil, antifreeze, automobile batteries and propane tanks will not be taken.

The school is at 520 Evergreen Mill Road.

Call 703-777-0187 for more information.
