Hamilton General Store offers fresh versions of old standards: Your favorite farm market and general store is back in business, thanks to some long-time friends and Hamilton residents determined to preserve the old-town appeal of downtown Hamilton.Kenny and Sharon Wine and Donald and Leslie Lowry worked together to bring back the general store.
All four were born and raised in Loudoun County. "We've known each other for years," Leslie Lowry says. "Sharon and I were in the same high school band together, and Donald and Sharon graduated in the same class."
But it's their love of Hamilton that's kept them in close contact over the years. The Lowrys have established a solid reputation as a provider of local goods, and with the help of the Wines, they were able to open for business at the end of May and once again meet the demand for their memorable goods.
The Lowrys have been selling their famous fresh seafood in town for years now. After recently relocating and opening up their seafood cafe, Lowry's Crab Shack, they had to temporarily close down the general store and farm market side of the business. They were forced to split up the three main elements of the market: crab cakes and seafood took over the site where Planet Wayside once stood, and their gardening center, Lowry's at Taylor's Corner, is now across the street from the Crab Shack. As for the general store, it took a little longer to find a location.
"We wanted a place that looks like it's been there all along," Kenny Wine says. "We wanted it within walking distance of everything -- it's really convenient."
All your favorite store items are back, Leslie Lowry says. Remember that rich chocolate milk from South Mountain Creamery? Or what about that fresh dairy eggnog in the wintertime? You'll find it here, along with items from local growers, like plump tomatoes and pumpkins, Chef Eloy salsa, Endless Summer Harvest marinara sauce, old-fashioned seasonal candies and McCutcheon's apple cider.
The Hamilton General Store is on West Colonial Highway across from the post office. For more information, call 540-338-2348.
