Supervisors to consider tall-grass ordinance

Loudoun County officials may create an ordinance that would limit how tall residents can let their grass grow on their lawns.

Currently, Loudoun does have an ordinance in place that targets unkempt properties. But it allows the county to cite a property owner only if the lawn poses a health or safety hazard to the public.

This new ordinance, which the Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss at its July 15 business meeting, would allow the county to bypass this requirement. It also would let the board establish a maximum allowable height for lawns.

The board would need approval from state lawmakers to establish such an ordinance.

Also on Tuesday, supervisors will learn more about a proposal to have volunteers and prisoners on work-release cut unruly lawns. According to a report prepared by county staff, state law permits prisoners to work only on property owned by the local government or by a nonprofit organization.

So far in 2008, complaints of tall grass in Loudoun are up 800 percent from 2007. Many of these complaints involve foreclosed homes.
