Police and fire briefs

The following news happened in Loudoun's public safety fields throughout the week.

Man sought for attempted sexual assault

A woman told police that a man tried to sexually assault her July 7 in Sterling Park, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

A deputy near North Ithaca Road heard a woman screaming about 9 p.m. The deputy investigated and found a man assaulting a woman. When the deputy chased the man, he fled, Troxell said.

More deputies, along with a canine unit, were called to the scene to search the area, but they couldn't find the man, Troxell said.

The woman said she was walking home when the man grabbed her and tried to sexually assault her. She described her attacker as a dark-skinned Hispanic male with dark brown hair, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 170 pounds.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 703-777-0475. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919.

Anyone with information leading to an arrest and indictment could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Possible utility scam

The Leesburg Police Department is asking residents and business owners to be aware of a possible utility scam in the area, spokesman Lt. Wes Thompson said.

Recently, a man and woman in their mid-20s walked into a local business claiming they were Verizon representatives, Thompson said.

But, when they asked to see old phone bills to verify the account number, the business owner became suspicious and called Verizon. It turned out that the people were not affiliated with the company, Thompson said.

Leesburg Police remind everyone that repairmen and women, service advisers and subcontractors should have a work order in hand and not need personal or account information. They also should have credentials displayed, verifying their names and places of employment, Thompson said.

Anyone in a similar situation who is doubting the validity of a service call should contact the Leesburg Police at 703-771-4500.

Malicious wounding

A young man was hit in the head with a metal baseball bat in Leesburg July 7, Leesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Wes Thompson said.

Around 6:30 p.m., police were called to Leesburg Elementary School on Plaza Street for a report of an assault involving a crowd of young people, Thompson said.

When they arrived, they found the victim, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated and released, Thompson said.

The attackers in the group ran away to adjacent neighborhoods. Many young people in the surrounding area were interviewed, Thompson said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Leesburg Police at 703-771-4500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the Leesburg Crimeline at 703-443-TIPS.

Shot fired at house

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is trying to find out who fired a shot into a home in Ashburn July 5, spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Amid the noise of fireworks, residents in the 20400 block of Needleleaf Way heard a loud pop. Then they saw a bulge in a bedroom wall of the house and found a hole on the outside of the house, Troxell said.

After the incident was reported to police, deputies arrived and found a bullet lodged in the wall, Troxell said.

Two men stabbed

Two men were stabbed in Sterling Park early July 4, and the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is searching for their attackers, spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Police were called to Chase Heritage Circle about 2:30 a.m. for a report that people were being disorderly in the area, Troxell said.

When police arrived, they found two men in an apartment. The men had been stabbed.

The victims said they were near a bike path when a silver two-door Honda pulled up. Several people got out of the car and began to argue with them. During the argument, the two men were stabbed, Troxell said.

One of the victims was treated at Inova Loudoun Hospital and released, while the other was treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital and released, Troxell said.

High-speed chase

A 20-year-old Manassas man is in custody after leading authorities on a high-speed chase July 1 from Loudoun County into Fairfax County.

Around 11:30 p.m., a Loudoun County Sheriff's Deputy recognized the car of Walter Diaz, who was wanted for an assault earlier this year, spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

When he tried to pull the car over, the driver turned off his lights and did not stop. He drove onto the Dulles Toll Road and exited onto Route 28 south.

Troxell said police followed the car to an apartment complex on Sunrise Valley Drive in Fairfax County, where the driver and passenger ran away.

Fairfax County Police later found Diaz near Route 28.

Loudoun County authorities charged Diaz with stalking, felonious assault, and speeding to elude law enforcement. He is being held in Fairfax County, Troxell said.

Ice cream worker arrested

A woman was arrested July 1 for illegally selling fireworks out of a neighborhood ice cream truck, Loudoun County Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mary Maguire said.

The fireworks are similar to ones that injured a young man June 30. The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office was called when the boy suffered second-degree burns on his upper body, Maguire said.

A photo of the ice cream truck's display shows that the driver was selling sparklers and Pop Pop snaps.

The ice cream truck driver whose name has not yet been released, was charged with selling prohibited fireworks, selling fireworks without a permit, selling fireworks on public property and selling fireworks without required liability insurance, all Class 1 misdemeanors, Maguire said. More charges are pending.
