HCA: In spite of the recent fire at the Old Stone School, the traditional HCA Fourth of July celebration will take place Saturday, July 5, at 5 p.m. The HCA relies on generous contributions for this family-oriented, fun festivity. The fund needs about $3,200 more. The HCA’s annual membership drive is also under way. To join or renew your membership and/or to make a donation to HCA, the fire fund or its fireworks fund, please use the form on the Web site www.hillsborova.org and mail it in HCA, 37016, Charles Town Pike, Purcellville, VA 20132. The HCA Web site is a great place to keep informed of upcoming events.

The festivities will take place on the grounds of the Old Stone School starting at 5 p.m. There will be music from Hewn From the Mountain; complimentary ice cream, carnival games, raffles and a bake sale with homemade treats. Proceeds from the ticket sales for games, raffles and the bake sale will go to the HCA. Barbecue chicken dinners may be purchased from the Hillsboro Ruritans for $7 a plate Drinks are an additional $l. Or bring your own picnic supper. It is hoped that the auditorium will be open in time for the event. A special performance by the Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers is contingent upon the auditorium’s availability. At dusk a brilliant display of fireworks will complete the evening’s celebration.

Baked goods needed: The HCA needs cookies, bars, brownies, etc., for its Independence Day celebration. Cookies should be packaged three to a Ziploc bag, and bars and brownies two to a bag. Please let Belle Ware know if you plan to donate baked goods. Last year attendees were disappointed because baked goods sold out early. If you can donate, perhaps you would consider a double batch? Anyway, call Belle ASAP at 540-668-6336. Thanks in advance.

Old Stone School Fund: Those wishing to donate online via Paypal account to the restoration of the OSS following the recent fire can now do so on the HCA Web site, www.hillsborova.org. Restoration work is well under way.

Independence celebration: Doukenie Winery will celebrate Independence Day Friday, July 4. The winery will be open at noon for business as usual, but at 5-9 p.m. a barbecue will be available for purchase, and at 7-9 p.m., guests will enjoy the music of Todd Wright (formerly with the Pat McGee Band). Interested attendees should check the Web site www.Doukeniewinery.com for updates and details.

Cheer camp: The Douglass Community Center will offer a cheer camp, which will include instruction for team building, basic stunting, safety spotting and performance skills. Emphasis will be on cheers, chants, dance and group formations. Participants should bring a snack and bottled water. Camp is open for those ages 6-12 and the cost is $85 per child. Sessions will be Monday through Friday, July 14-18, 9 a.m.-noon, and again Monday through Friday, July 21-25, 1-4 p.m. To register visit dcc@loudoun.gov or call 703-771-5913.

The tournament takes place Friday, July 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg. Admission is free for spectators, but participants pay $5 and must be five years or older. Registration is necessary by July 23. To register or ask questions, send e-mail to dcc@loudoun.gov or call 703-771-5913.

Summer arts program: Adults and children looking for creative fun this summer may find just the right program at the Round Hill Arts Center. New to the schedule this year are a teen pottery camp with Amy Oliver and the “More Flower Power” watercolor workshop with Catherine Hillis.

The center also offers pottery classes for adults and teens at beginner through advanced levels, one-day introductory pottery workshops, figure-drawing sessions and educational gallery talks for groups. Back this year is the center’s unique “Drawing on Nature Camp” during which rising third-, fourth- and fifth-graders will have the opportunity to explore the woods and fields of The Blue Ridge Center as young artist-naturalists. Also continuing this summer will be the Hands-On Studio for preschoolers, a parent-child class that combines music and stories with a different medium each lesson.

Finally, the center will continue its tradition of hosting its free bluegrass and folk jam sessions the last Friday of each month. This event is an excellent opportunity for music students to learn new tunes and techniques by playing alongside many seasoned and professional musicians.
