Leesburg considers opposing Broadlands hospital
Leesburg Town Council took up a resolution Dec. 9 opposing the construction of the county's second hospital in Broadlands.
The county Planning Commission has recommended approval of HCA's application to build a 164-bed hospital on 58 acres on Broadlands Boulevard, about 5 miles from Inova Loudoun Hospital at Lansdowne. The application will go before the Board of Supervisors in January.
"My own feeling," said Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd, "is that if that goes through, it violates the county's Comprehensive Plan and will be the death knell for the emergency department in Leesburg and other medical services for Leesburg and western Loudoun. Leesburg especially is at risk."
Umstattd said the population along the U.S. 50 corridor is still growing rapidly, and that would be the "perfect location for a new full-service hospital in Loudoun County."
Diana Johns, founder and organizer of Leesburg Residents for BRMC (Broadlands Regional Medical Center), in an e-mail, called rumors of lost medical services on Inova Loudoun Medical Campus in Leesburg an "empty threat."
Johns questioned why the council would take a position on a land-use application that is not within its boundaries.
The hospital in nearby Ashburn, Johns said, will bring health-care services to Leesburg residents and add millions of dollars to the county's budget.
UPDATE Dec. 10 – Leesburg Town Council Dec. 9 passed a motion put forth by Ken Reid supporting the medical services on Cornwall Street in Leesburg. It did not pass a resolution put forth by Mayor Umstattd critical of the Broadlands hospital project.

It is about time you all desided to or are at least considering putting a hospital down there you need to put one in between lessburg and winchester
