Arts center fundraiser, naturalist training and martial arts

By Susanne Kahler

Arts center fundraiser: Historic Castle Hall in Round Hill is the site of Round Hill Arts Center's fabulous fall fundraiser, Saturday, Sept. 6, 6-9 p.m. In order for the Arts Center to continue to provide quality art education, gallery exhibits, its gift shop, music studio and the hugely popular monthly Bluegrass Jam session, the center seeks community support. Attendees will help the arts center and enjoy a wonderful night of art, music and fine food in the bargain. Enjoy music by The Woodshedders, catering by Savoir Fare, and a silent auction of artists' offerings as well as a mobile art gallery. The Woodshedders, an acoustic Gypsy Jazz Quintet, are known for exceptional guitar performance and the distinctive vocals of Dwayne Brooke, pouncing rhythms and leads by Stuart Orser, excellence on double bass by Ryan Mayo, masterful mandolin by Chance McCoy, and the searing fiddle tunes of Dave Vandeventer. Theirs is a musical fusion of nostalgia and creative invention you won't want to miss. For more information, visit www.thewoodshedders.com. Joan Wolford and Savoir Fare have been lighting up the tables of Loudoun's finest events since 1999. Savoir Fare's fine cuisine is known for delicious flavors, creative combinations and beautiful presentation. Round Hill Arts Center is proud to claim both The Woodshedders and Savoir Fare as friends and long-time supporters of the Arts Center. Order your tickets today by calling Round Hill Arts Center at 540-338-5050 or by sending your order to The Round Hill Arts Center, P.O. Box 3, Round Hill, VA 20142. Tickets are $50 per person. Castle Hall is located at 11 E. Loudoun St., Round Hill. For more information, visit www.roundhillartscenter.org.

Naturalist training: The Banshee Reeks Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program will begin its fall 2008 training course on Sept. 9. Class schedule, application and details are found on the chapter Web site: www.vmnbansheereeks.org. Classes are open to adults 18 and older; class size is limited. The curriculum consists of fifteen Saturday sessions, with time split between the classroom and field studies. Sessions run from September to May of each year. Cost of the total program is $200 per person and includes all of the course materials. The training course is focused on the Piedmont region of the state. Topics include Virginia’s biogeography and climatology, basic ecology, identifying the organisms found in Virginia’s natural habitats, botany, taxonomy, natural interpretation and teaching skills, resource management, and use of field guides and tools. The Banshee Reeks Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program is a corps of volunteers located in Loudoun County who provide education, outreach and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and areas within our community. Founded in 2006 at the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Leesburg, the chapter has, to date, conducted three basic training sessions and a number of advanced training events. Thirty-five members have attained state certification, with 12 recent graduates of the training program working towards their certification. Each member is required to participate in a minimum of 40 hours basic training, eight hours of advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service. To retain certification, Virginia Master Naturalists must fulfill annual requirements of eight hours advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service. Events and programs are available at www.vmnbansheereeks.org. The Virginia Master Naturalist program is sponsored jointly by the following state agencies: Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Department of Forestry, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and the Virginia Museum of Natural History. For more information on the state organization, visit www.virginiamasternaturalist.org.

Martial arts: In conjunction with reopening of his Purcellville studio in September at the new location on 21st Street directly across from Nichol's Hardware, David Oakley's World Championship Karate is renaming his studios "Oakley's Knockout Fitness & Martial Arts." As more and more adults are looking for an alternative to the gym, the fight business is booming. Many seek the bodies, skill and level of conditioning that fighters have, and the new name of the studio will reflect this trend. You can have the skill and conditioning of a fighter -- without the bumps and bruises. No longer are martial arts studios just here for self-defense, or life and character skills -- more than ever, they are being perceived as a total fitness and conditioning program.
