CountrySide and Cascades

The Waves, new students, a book date, the farmers markets and gardening

By Kathie Felix

Do the Wave: The CountrySide Waves swim team finished the competitive swimming season undefeated with a total of 1,591 points. The team stayed at the top of the charts in the post-season, with 18 first-place finishes (including three firsts each by Cole and Riley Jamison) and 21 swimmers qualified to participate in the All Star Meet.

All Stars: Eight CountrySide Waves swam in the All Star Meet -- Kelly Mogensen, Grace Deker, Jonathan Priest, Ben Ortt, Javier Merry, Coach Ra Ra Endres, Coach Cole Jamison, and Coach Nick Swinimer. Coach Jamison earned a gold medal for the 50-meter butterfly and set a new team record (29.31) in the 15-18 boys’ 50-meter backstroke, beating the record he had tied a week earlier in the divisional meet. (The previous record of 29:38 was set 10 years earlier by Stephen Horning.) Jonathan Priest won a silver medal in the 100-meter individual medley and a bronze medal in the 25-meter butterfly.

Thanks, Coach: The CountrySide Waves swim team was coached this summer by a group of outstanding coaches -- Coaches Katie Endres and Reina Mason and Assistant Coaches Alexandra (Ra Ra) Endres, Cole Jamison, Andy Mears and Nick Swinimer.

New students: This week, Dominion High School holds its final two seminars for parents of students new to the school. The sessions are scheduled for Aug. 20, 7:30-9 p.m., and Aug. 23, 9:30-11 a.m. Topics include practical strategies for helping students develop responsible academic and behavioral habits and the school-wide plan for promoting effective communication among parents, students and teachers. All of the sessions are the same; parents should attend only one session. Each presentation will be translated into Spanish. Childcare will be available.

Book date: The Cascades Women’s Book Club meets Aug. 21 to discuss “Run” by Ann Patchett. New members are welcome to join this diverse group. The only requirements are the enjoyment of reading, eating, and making new friends. For more information, call 703-421-1060.

Teen luau: CountrySide hosts a teen luau on Aug. 23, 6-9 p.m., at the Lindenwood Pool. The event, for ages 14-19, includes music, food, games, prizes and an inflatable water tag arena. Volunteers are needed. To volunteer, call the Proprietary at 703-430-0715.

Cascades Farmers Market: The summer may be winding down, but the Cascades Farmers Market will be going strong until Oct. 26. The market is open on Sundays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., in the parking lot of the Senior Center at Cascades Marketplace.

Garden lovers: The Garden Group of the CountrySide Women’s Club heads to River Farm in Alexandria, the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, on Aug. 26. The trip includes lunch at RT’s Restaurant on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria and, time permitting, a visit to Green Spring Gardens, a Fairfax County park featuring an 18th-century manor house and 5 acres of gardens. Carpools meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Rite Aid in Sterling’s Great Falls Plaza. To attend, call 703-430-2048.
