Culprits identified, family movie, Army band, Carver open house, the Yellow Pages, a yard sale, an art show, voter registration, OSS fund, rummage sale, well wishes and birthdays

By Sue Ulland

Culprits identified: The mystery has been solved. For weeks now, food for our outside cats has disappeared every night, as well as their water dish. Frustrated, I replaced the plastic water container and changed the water as needed. To add to my frustration, I discovered something had been bathing in and relocating the larger dog water dish in the dog pen, necessitating constant cleaning and replacement.

Recently, while watering the ferns on the deck early one morning, my eye caught movement in a locust tree nearby. “When what to my wondering eyes should appear,” but not one, not two, but three little masked bandit siblings staring at me from above. Yes, three juvenile raccoons scurried down the tree and off into the tall grass. I now lock the dog pen and bring in the cat dishes.

Duh.

Family movie: Fireman’s Field in Purcellville will be the venue for Family Movie Night Friday, Aug. 15. “Beauty and the Beast” will be shown at 8:15 p.m. This is a family-oriented, free event. Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the show.

U.S. Army Band: The U.S. Army Band Downrange will return to Purcellville for an outdoor concert on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at Fireman’s Field. In the event of rain, the concert will move inside into the skating rink. Again, remember to bring a blanket and/or chair.

Carver Center: The Carver Center in Purcellville invites you to attend its open house Saturday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The center is a great resource for area residents. Those wishing to meet with instructors or simply to find out about the classes offered should definitely attend. Refreshments, balloons and face-painting for the children will be offered. Demonstrations include kickboxing, Zumba, line dance, chess, Indian cooking, yoga, Scottish dance, Nintendo Wii, mental muscle, acrylic painting, karate and watercolor painting.

Yellow Pages: Recently updated Yellow Pages phone books were delivered in Loudoun County. Old phone books may be recycled with newspapers at the Hillsboro Elementary School’s recycling center (37110 Charles Town Pike), not only now but throughout the year

Upcoming yard sale: Hillsboro United Methodist Church members invite you to attend a yard sale at the church (rain or shine) Saturday, Sept. 6, starting at 8 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the sale will be in the fellowship hall. Light breakfast and lunch will be for sale as well. Questions? Call Patti Moran at 540-882-5862.

Art Show: The Round Hill Arts Center presents a unique exhibit, “A Little Art Show,” featured at the center’s gallery through August. The show features 69 pieces from 22 artists in a variety of media. The small (all are 12 by 12 inches or less) and affordable works include miniature oils, collage, fused glass, nature photography and more. The gallery is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It is at 6 W. Loudoun St. in the center of Round Hill. Questions? Visit www.roundhillartscenter.org or call 540-338-5050.

Registration deadline: If you are not already registered in Loudoun County, the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Extended hours for absentee voting begin Oct. 20. Additionally, the Loudoun County Electoral Board is seeking election officers to help with the record number of voters expected. This is a compensated position requiring one training session and a long day at the polls (5 a.m. until tabulations are complete). If you are interested, e-mail elections@loudoun.gov or call 703-777-0548, ext. 5, to find out where to register near you.

Old Stone School Fund: Those wishing to supplement insurance coverage for repairs incurred from the May 27 accidental fire can donate online via Paypal account or by check on the HCA Web site, www.hillsborova.org. Restoration work is progressing and can be viewed in wonderful photos on the Web site. As a result of the damage and subsequent repair work, the building will remain closed until further notice.

Rummage sale: The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital continues to seek donations for its 70th annual rummage sale scheduled for Oct. 17-18 (9 a.m.-3 p.m. both days) at the Morven Park Equestrian Center just north of Leesburg off U.S. 15 North. All proceeds benefit the hospital. To donate, call 703-771-2985 and leave a message. A member will return your call and set up a convenient time and place to meet. Trailers for storage are conveniently located in Purcellville, Leesburg and at the Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne. Help the Ladies Board celebrate 70 years of giving to the community by donating your usable items to its rummage sale. Something new has been added this year. As usual, for the normal sale hours no admission will be charged, but those opting for ticketed early admission (8-9 a.m.) will be charged a $5 fee. Tickets for early admission may soon be purchased at the Inova Loudoun Hospital Gift Shop at Lansdowne, Black Shutter Antiques in Leesburg or at the Twice is Nice Thrift Shop in Leesburg.
