Two concerts, a family fest, school nights, books for Kenya

By Jeanette Gandhi

Broadlands concerts: The Broadlands concert series returns this Friday night with the RTTs playing 5:30-6:30 p.m. and Savingnine 7-9:30 p.m. Admission is free. Concerts take place at Hillside Park, 42035 Waxpool Road. Please park only at the visitor's center.

Lansdowne concert: Ron Kronz and Traffic Jam comes to Lansdowne Resort's Jazz on the Potomac series this Friday evening. The fun begins at 6 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Sit back, relax and unwind to the sounds of smooth jazz overlooking the Potomac River. Lansdowne's culinary team prepares summer foods and drinks. For more information, visit www.lansdowneresort.com and click on Resort Events.

Family Fest: Aug. 23 will probably be a hazy, hot and humid day. Why not spend it at Dulles Town Center, enjoying the fifth annual Family Fest, presented by INOVA Loudoun Hospital 10 a.m.-4 p.m. You'll find many interactive activities focusing on family health and safety, nutrition, education, community awareness and, most importantly, family fun. The event will showcase hands-on, interactive stations, exhibits, demonstrations and live stage entertainment. The first 100 families will receive a free goody bag filled with coupons and surprises. All families will have an opportunity to participate in the Family Passport game and have a chance to win fabulous prizes from the treasure chest. Families can register to win a $1,000 Shopping Spree. Look for some exciting new activities and guest appearances for 2008. Free parking with easy wheelchair and stroller accessibility will be available.

Back-to-school nights: Loudoun County Public Schools has posted the list of back-to-school nights on the LCPS Web site. Go to www.loudoun.k12.va.us. Some schools hold informal orientation sessions, primarily for new students, during August. These will not be listed on the LCPS site; instead, you'll need to visit your school's Web site or call the school.

Books to Kenya: Here's some good news from Newton-Lee Elementary School. Students at that school worked together on a year-end project to send books to Kenya. Books were donated from a book drive, brought in from home and collected from a few teachers' personal classroom libraries. Newton-Lee's Community Club members and second-grade teacher Jensy Richards' class got together to pack and send 50 pounds of gently used books to Kenya's Camel Book Drive.

Richards' class, which worked on several other projects locally during the 2007-2008 school year, decided to go abroad for the last project. The second-graders asked Newton-Lee's Community Club (made up of fourth- and fifth-grade students) to help out. A $500 grant from Friends of Kenya helped to pay for postage to mail the books and to buy new books from the Camel Book Drive's wish list at Amazon.com. With funds remaining, another book drive is planned for this coming year.

The Newton-Lee students got together one afternoon to write letters to the students in Kenya who will receive the books. They packed and weighed the boxes and had a brief slide show on Kenya to better understand where the books were being sent. Guidance counselor Katie Swartzendruber, the sponsor of the Community Club, and Richards, who served in the Peace Corps in Kenya, look forward to working together with their students in the coming school year to help meet needs in their own community and abroad.
