Women indicted in killing of mother/grandmother
A mother and daughter were indicted by a Loudoun grand jury Aug. 11 in the killing of 66-year-old Hanh Thi Hoang -- the mother of one of the suspects and the grandmother of the other.
Hoang was found dead July 24 in an upstairs bedroom of a townhouse at 256 Golden Larch Terrace in Leesburg.
Leesburg Police Department spokesman Lt. Wes Thompson said police will not release a motive or cause of death because a trial has not yet taken place. However, a mallet was seized during the search of the house, according to the search warrant.
In an affidavit filed July 24, Detective B.D. Shaw wrote that Hoang's son, Hiep Dong, called the Leesburg Police Department at about 8 p.m. to report that his mother had been killed.
When officers arrived, they found Hoang dead. There was blood around her head and an open wound on her chest, the affidavit said.
That evening, Leesburg Police asked residents to be on the lookout for a blue car that was reported stolen from the house.
On July 28, police in New Mexico arrested Phoung Kim Thi Dong, 39, and Julie Thi Dong, 18, both of Leesburg, and charged them with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
The women were driving the four-door 2005 blue Honda Accord that had been taken from Hoang's house, Leesburg police said.
Hoang was Phoung Dong's mother and Julie Dong's grandmother.
The suspects were extradited from New Mexico to Leesburg Aug. 7-8 before each was indicted Monday with murder.
Loudoun County tax records show that the house where Hoang lived was purchased by her son Hiep Dong and Linda Nguyen Dong on June 16.
Thompson did not know whether or not Hiep Dong is the brother of suspect Phoung Dong.
Thompson also would not release information about whether the suspects lived in the house where Hoang was murdered.
Along with the mallet, other items seized include a computer, a red-stained plastic bag containing yarn, several phones with chargers, a flashlight, a pillow and pillowcase, layers of a mattress, fabric from a box spring, a photo album, hairs, medicines, $6,100 and two credit cards.
