Firefighter released from hospital

The last of six firefighters injured in a Memorial Day house fire in Leesburg was released from the hospital Aug. 1.

Lt. John “Bones” Earley, of the Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management, sustained the most severe injuries in the May 25 fire on Meadowood Court. He was treated at Washington Hospital Center's Burn Unit for more than two months.

The five other injured firefighters were all treated and released within three days after the incident.

More than two months after the incident, Lt. Earley’s much anticipated return home marks a significant step forward for him,” Loudoun County Fire-Rescue Chief Joseph Pozzo said.

On behalf of the Fire-Rescue System, I would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all who have reached out in support of Lt. Earley. Your kindness and assistance have been incredible.”

When firefighters arrived at the two-alarm blaze shortly after 1 p.m. May 25, they found fire billowing from the attic of the two-story single-family home.

"With the fire spreading and conditions deteriorating rapidly, the firefighters were forced to escape from the home through a second-story window," Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mary Maguire said.
