Lansdowne indoor pool may open this summer

A rumor has been swirling around Lansdowne about its indoor pool, which has been closed for renovations for two years because of a mold infestation.

Some are saying a special assessment might be heading out to residents to help pay for the cost of pool repairs and other fixes at the Potomac Club, reportedly totaling more than $2.5 million.

Jeff Brown, president of the Lansdowne on the Potomac board of directors, said he would not comment on the rumor. He would neither confirm nor deny the rumored special fee, saying that anything he said would fuel the fire.

Homeowners, however, were quick to express their views on the possible special assessment.

"That would be unacceptable if [a special assessment] happens," said resident Emily Spencer. "It's a shame that we are all paying for the pool already. It's something that should have been fixed a long time ago."

Another resident, Nick Dranes, said HOA fees are already in the "high 200s" a month, and an additional fee for pool repairs would not go over well in his household.

In November 2007, the now defunct "Lansdowne ... and Out in the Open" blog reported "there will be no need for any additional assessment" to cover the costs of repairs and renovation of the pool.

"The pool project will be paid for with a combination of current reserves, funds received from the developer settlement and proceeds from a loan," the blog said.

Brown would not comment further, but he did confirm that the pool repairs should be completed and the pool should open this summer.

The 25-meter indoor pool closed April 7, 2006, because of a mold problem in the Potomac Club, a renovated historic dairy barn now used as the Lansdowne community center.

At the Lansdowne Town Center on a recent afternoon, residents said they were annoyed by the fact that the pool has been closed for so long.

"They are taking too long to fix it," said resident Erica Spears, who noted she would have loved to use the indoor pool over the winter. "I think our dues are overpriced already, and it's dumb we're paying all this money and they don't even fix the pool in time."
