Spartans dance their way to victory

The Broad Run girls' soccer squad ran their record to 8-0, including seven Dulles District wins, with a 6-0 defeat of Dominion April 18 in Ashburn.

Goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter recorded her seventh consecutive shutout, supported by multiple-goal efforts from Holly King and Carina Chavez.

Kelly Smith and Kelly Evans notched the other Spartan scores.

They are skilled, vocal leaders for us,” said Broad Run coach Claire Collins of the four goal-scorers.

The Titans maintained a close match early. Dominion was not able to move the ball consistently, but kept Broad Run bottled up for a 2-0 halftime deficit.

Midway through the second half, Chavez connected on both of her tallies in rapid succession to salt away victory.

"We're connecting," Collins observed, noting that she has only two seniors, Chavez and Smith, on the roster.

"This team is not at all selfish. They read the game well."

Hunter has read the game well for the Spartans with her shutout streak, though Collins also credits her defense, including Whitney Church and Valerie Powell.

King, a sharp-shooting midfielder, earned first-team All-Region II honors as a sophomore last season.

The Spartans prepared for their season, defeating bigger schools Westfield and Osbourn Park in scrimmages before handling Loudoun Valley 5-1 in the opener.

Despite the unblemished record, Collins is still developing a feel for how her young team will evolve over a full season, particularly after the graduation of two All-Region players from last year's regional championship squad.

"We're hoping the success continues. We'll have to stay healthy, and definitely keep in the mental side of the game," she said.
