A brand new flea market in Loudoun County

If you’re a flea market enthusiast, you’re probably waiting for warmer weather so you can get out and find rare treasures. If you’re tired of the tried and true, try out the newest flea market in Northern Virginia.

The organizers of the first Flea Market event in Aldie – Diamonds & Rust and Bella Villa -- also are hoping for great, warm weather on April 12. They plan to host a Flea Crawl at 8 a.m. at 39317 John Mosby Highway, Aldie. The rain date is May 10.

Participants include neighboring merchants and approximately 10 antiques dealers. “Even our landlord is going to participate,” said Nancy Calabrese, co-owner of Bella Villa with Rosanna Smith, referring to the owner of the Little River Inn, as she poured Italian soda in a vintage juice glass.

Keeping to the character of the village, the event organizers plan to provide guests and passers-by a hometown feel. Dealers will set up their tables in Bella Villa’s backyard. The Aldie Peddler plans to showcase earth-friendly poly-lumber furniture. To offer shoppers a taste of something different, the Peddler’s owner, Wally Lunceford, is holding a wine-tasting event at his store, also on April 12 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Smith and Diamonds & Rust's Marcia Hall, the key players in making this event a reality, promise old-fashioned Good Humor ice-cream bars and espresso.

“We always offer espresso to our guests, just as one would if they were visiting a friend's home in Italy,” Smith said.

“You’re bringing nostalgia to customers. People who love antiques can browse for hours and hours,” she added. “The youth are becoming more interested in antiques. Despite the era of text messaging, there’s a part of us that wants to reach back to an era of our grandparents.”

She remembered one customer who was looking for a glider from the 1940s. After looking through Bella Villa’s collection, the customer explained she was trying to buy back the glider that belonged to her grandmother.

Smith remembered the customer saying, “The thing is that I’m trying to buy a memory.”

Dianna Green, a McLean resident and a flea market enthusiast, explained her own motivation for visiting flea markets: “The thing about flea markets is that you never know when you’ll find a copy of the Declaration of Independence.”

If you’re interested in participating in the Flea Crawl, contact Smith at 703-327-5313 or Hall at 703-327-2006.

For more information on the Aldie Peddler Shoppes' wine tasting, contact Lunceford at 703-327-6743.

If the flea crawl isn’t your thing, the Aldie Mill -- on the National Register of Historic Places and one of only two water-powered mills in Virginia – opens for the season on the same day. The Mill is open on Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and offers tours.
