Kaine congratulates Loudoun Cares
Before meeting with residents for his town hall discussion March 31 in Ashburn, Gov. Tim Kaine (D) met with Loudoun Cares founder Andy Johnston to congratulate him.Loudoun Cares -- a nonprofit organization working to provide affordable office space for other nonprofits -- raised $100,000, exceeding the amount required to receive a one-to-one match nonstate grant last year.
Johnston said he will use the $87,500 given by the state to assist other nonprofits.
“We really want to do this thing where we provide office space for nonprofits so that all their overhead doesn't go to leasing space,” Johnston said.
He and Loudoun Cares operate out of the Inova Loudoun Medical Campus in Leesburg on Cornwall Street.
“Our primary vision has been this multi-tenant facility,” he said.
Kaine shook hands with Johnston, telling him nonprofits are what help raise living standards in Virginia.
Because of revenue shortfalls this year, the General Assembly cut funding for nonstate organizations in its biennial budget, which starts July 1. Kaine said many of the state's nonprofits, including Loudoun Cares, will be affected by the cuts. The grant Loudoun Cares received falls under the previous biennial budget.
The state forms its biennial budget based on revenue projections. Kaine said if budget shortfalls are not as high as expected, he would work to restore funding to the state's nonprofits.
