Scout can stay
In our business, it's a welcome change to see a story with positive impact.
We do not take credit for the fact that Leesburg Boy Scout Joe Andrade, 13, has had his deportation put on hold. But a story published June 11 by Times-Mirror reporter Holly Hobbs may have opened some eyes.
Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va) got wind of the situation, and several letters to his office – some of which contained copies of the Times-Mirror article – by Jose's troop leaders and friends got the senator's attention.
His office sent a letter of inquiry about Jose to ICE. Interviews with the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement followed, and Jose can stay with his mother and siblings indefinitely in this country, instead of being forced to return to his native El Salvador.
Jose entered the U.S. illegally in 2005 to join his mom, who was here legally. He was apprehended shortly after crossing the Rio Grande, and three years later ordered to leave the country by July 16.
Jose said he's eagerly awaiting school this September at J. Lupton Simpson Middle School. We extend well wishes for his continued success toward gaining merit badges as a Scout.
