Bible Reading Marathon

By Annette Scheel

A Bible Reading Marathon lasting approximately ninety (90) hours will be held in Leesburg, Virginia, beginning at Noon, Saturday, April 26th. This Marathon will continue through Thursday, May 1 until Noon on the Loudoun County courthouse grounds at the intersection of Market and King Streets.  The reading schedule for Sunday through Wednesday is at 6:00 a.m. until midnight. An open invitation to participate has been extended to adults and children from all walks of life, of differing faiths, cultures, religions, languages, civic groups and ethnic groups.

The first recorded event of this type is described in the Old Testament (Tanach) Book of Nehemiah (chapters 8 and 9) when the priest Ezra assembled the returning exiled Israelites to stand in the center of the city (Jerusalem) to hear the reading of the Torah (Five Books of Moses).

President George H. Bush signed a proclamation declaring 1990 to be the International Year of Bible Reading. The nineties soon became the “Decade of Bible Reading” and world-wide Marathons were thus launched. Bible reading marathons have been conducted on the steps of the Washington D. C. National Capitol, state capitols and county courthouses, school campuses, and city parks to name but a few locations. The International Bible Reading association (IBRA) expects that in 2008 more than a thousand Bible Reading Marathons will be conducted around the world.

The Marathon will be the Loudoun Awakening lead activity prior to the National Day of Prayer on May 1 and the Global Day of Prayer on May 10 taking place in various Loudoun locations.Citizen groups, families and individuals are being asked to volunteer for this historic Loudoun event. Several hundred people are expected to be involved as readers are invited to contact Marathon coordinators:  Annette Scheel (703-727-2945) email:  kagems4@gmail.com or Gwen Armstrong WINDSONGDANCER.@Verizon.net.  We encourage all people to attend and be a part of Loudoun history as we seek our creator’s grace and blessings.
